Yvoire
A fortified Savoyard village on Lake Geneva, with historic gates, two harbours and a garden devoted to the senses.

From the source
Yvoire lies in Haute-Savoie on the French shore of Lake Geneva. The former fortified town retains a château, parts of its enclosure and historic gateways. Its narrow streets connect the centre with two harbours, recalling the importance of fishing and lake transport. Saint-Pancrace church has a distinctive reflective bell tower. The Jardin des Cinq Sens occupies the château’s former kitchen garden and offers a separate garden visit. Yvoire is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. The castle’s presence in the skyline does not establish public access to its interiors; the village, harbours, church and garden have different visiting conditions.
Editorial reading
Yvoire is best approached as a meeting of enclosure and openness. The gates and narrow lanes hold the village together, while the harbours release the view across the lake. The garden offers a third, more intimate scale. Moving among these spaces gives greater depth than concentrating only on flowers and picturesque façades.
Recommendation
Walk between the historic gateways and harbours, then choose the garden if its seasonal opening suits your visit. Check boat services directly before planning an arrival by lake. Treat the château as a private landmark unless a specific public visit is advertised.
