Šmartno: a fortified village among the Brda hills

The compact outline of Šmartno rises above cultivated hills. Its walls and towers give the village a strong collective form, while the streets inside reveal how a defensive settlement became a lived-in place.

From the source

Šmartno is a walled hilltop village in the Brda region of western Slovenia. The local tourism authority identifies five surviving towers and describes its former role on the Venetian-Austrian border. The village’s name comes from the Church of St Martin; its bell tower was formerly a defensive tower. The military character of the settlement began to change in the nineteenth century, and professional restoration started in the late 1970s. Today the village includes cultural exhibitions and the Brda House, which presents elements of a traditional home.

Editorial reading

The most rewarding reading begins with the village as a whole. Look at the relationship between its hilltop position, enclosing walls and the folds of the surrounding landscape before moving into individual streets. The settlement’s outline remains legible even when its earlier military purpose has receded.

Inside, changes of scale become the attraction: a tower, a short passage, a square and the church can be encountered within a compact walk. These transitions make the village more interesting than a single distant panorama. The cultivated hills around it provide an essential counterpoint, placing the enclosed settlement within a larger inhabited and working landscape.

Recommendation

Start with an exterior view of the village, then walk through the enclosed streets and squares. If the Brda House or current exhibitions are part of your plan, check their own opening arrangements with the local tourism office. Leave room for the surrounding Brda landscape rather than rushing onward after the first photograph.
