Sainte-Suzanne
A fortified Mayenne town above the Erve valley, with a keep, château and a working tradition of papermaking.

From the source
Sainte-Suzanne stands on a rocky height in Mayenne, overlooking the Erve valley and the Coëvrons landscape. The historic town retains a double system of ramparts, a keep and a château. Cobbled streets and stone houses connect these defensive structures to the domestic settlement. The château presents heritage interpretation, while the Grand Moulin preserves a working papermaking tradition in a former mill. Across the valley, Tertre Ganne provides a public perspective on the town’s elevated setting. Sainte-Suzanne belongs to Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. The fortified town, château and mill are distinct but complementary parts of its history.
Editorial reading
The distant view explains the defensive position, but the mill adds an important change of emphasis. It connects the town to water, production and skilled work rather than warfare alone. Walking between the streets and valley views allows the place to be read as a settlement with several kinds of history.
Recommendation
Combine a walk within the ramparts with the château’s interpretation, checking current admission. Consult the Grand Moulin’s programme before expecting a papermaking demonstration. Add Tertre Ganne for the broader view if the route and conditions suit your visit.
