Les Baux-de-Provence
A fortified stone village in the Alpilles, where lanes and château ruins open onto a landscape of rock and olive groves.

From the source
Les Baux-de-Provence occupies a rocky spur in the Alpilles, in Bouches-du-Rhône. The historic village contains narrow stone streets and buildings beneath the extensive remains of its château. The elevated site commands views across the surrounding rock formations and cultivated landscape. Olive growing is an important part of that setting. Nearby former quarries now host cultural presentations, but are a separate attraction from the village and château. Les Baux-de-Provence is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its significance is both architectural and geographical: the settlement, fortress and limestone terrain should be read together.
Editorial reading
The strongest impression is of stone worked at different scales: an entire spur, defensive walls, a house and a doorway. The village brings those scales close together. Time in the lanes provides a useful balance to the large panoramic spaces of the château site and the spectacle offered by the quarries.
Recommendation
Explore the village streets before choosing the château or quarry attraction. Check tickets and programmes independently, and allow for exposed ground, heat and uneven surfaces. The broad landscape views are best appreciated from maintained public routes and designated monument areas.
