Eguisheim
An Alsatian wine village of concentric lanes and half-timbered houses, close to the vineyards south of Colmar.

From the source
Eguisheim lies in Haut-Rhin, near Colmar, in the Alsatian vineyard landscape. Its compact centre is organised in concentric streets around the former castle area. Half-timbered houses, small courtyards and winegrowers’ buildings line the lanes. The central ensemble includes the château of the counts of Eguisheim and the chapel of Saint-Léon. The village is associated with the Alsace wine route and the nearby grands crus Eichberg and Pfersigberg. Eguisheim is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its architectural pattern and continuing relationship with wine production are more useful guides to the place than unverified claims about film or fairy-tale inspiration.
Editorial reading
The circular street pattern changes the experience of walking: a façade gives way to a bend rather than a long straight view. The village’s visual richness comes from these repeated turns and the variety of timber and masonry. Winegrowers’ premises connect the preserved centre to a working agricultural landscape.
Recommendation
Follow a circuit through the concentric lanes, then return to the central square. If wine interests you, arrange a tasting directly with a producer and confirm the appointment. Add a public vineyard walk when conditions permit; the vines themselves remain working land.
