From the source

Domme is a fortified bastide in the Dordogne department. Built on a plateau above the river, it combines a planned street layout with surviving gates and sections of enclosure. The elevated position provides extensive views across the Dordogne valley. The Porte des Tours is one of its best-known fortified entrances and contains historic graffiti, whose attribution should be treated with care rather than presented as proof of a single story. A cave system beneath the town is a separate visitor attraction. Domme belongs to Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its character lies in the combination of town planning, defensive architecture, limestone terrain and the river landscape below.

Editorial reading

Domme brings two geometries together: the ordered lines of a bastide and the irregular edge of a cliff. Walking between the central streets and the belvedere makes that contrast tangible. The caves add a third dimension beneath the surface, but the town itself deserves attention before descending into a separate attraction.

Recommendation

Begin with the gates and streets, then continue to the public viewpoints over the valley. Book or check the cave visit separately and consult its accessibility information. Treat stories about the Porte des Tours graffiti as interpretation unless the guide distinguishes the evidence and its uncertainties.
