Candes-Saint-Martin
A tuffeau village at the meeting of the Loire and Vienne, gathered around a fortified collegiate church.

From the source
Candes-Saint-Martin stands in Indre-et-Loire at the confluence of the Loire and the Vienne. Its pale tuffeau houses, slate roofs and narrow streets belong to the architectural landscape of western Touraine. The collegiate church of Saint-Martin is the village’s principal monument; its substantial silhouette combines religious architecture with defensive features. The settlement is closely associated with the memory of Saint Martin of Tours. The rivers and their junction are central to its geography, while neighbouring Montsoreau extends the riverside landscape into Anjou. Candes-Saint-Martin is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. The church, village streets and views of the confluence are complementary parts of the place.
Editorial reading
Here the river junction is more than a backdrop. It gives the village an orientation and explains the value of looking outward from the church and houses. Tuffeau catches changes in daylight, while the church introduces a heavier, more defensive presence. The interest lies in the relationship between a compact settlement and a broad meeting of waters.
Recommendation
Combine the collegiate church and lanes with a viewpoint over the confluence. Check church access and respect services. A walk towards Montsoreau can connect the two villages, subject to the route and weather. Stay on public paths: an attractive riverside frontage does not establish access through private gardens.
