Salers stands at about 950 metres in the Cantal department, within the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park. Its historic centre contains a notable ensemble of sixteenth-century residences and turreted houses built of volcanic stone. Saint-Mathieu church preserves works including seventeenth-century Aubusson tapestries. The Barrouze esplanade provides views towards the surrounding Cantal mountains. Cattle raising and the cheeses of Salers and Cantal connect the town’s identity to its agricultural hinterland. Salers is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its built heritage and mountain setting are closely related, while farms and burons beyond the centre remain separate destinations.

Redactionele duiding

The dark stone gives Salers a strong unity, yet the carved details and turreted houses keep it from feeling uniform. The move from enclosed streets to Barrouze opens the town towards its pastoral landscape. Architecture and agriculture become easier to read together when the visit includes that change of scale.

Aanbeveling

Explore the historic centre and Saint-Mathieu when open, then pause at Barrouze for the mountain view. Dress for the altitude and changing weather. Arrange any farm or buron visit separately, checking its seasonal access rather than assuming that a town visit includes rural production sites.
