Pérouges
A walled town in the Ain, with cobbled lanes, merchants’ houses and a church built into its defensive edge.

Bronfeiten
Pérouges lies in the Ain department, northeast of Lyon. Its walled historic centre contains cobbled lanes and houses associated with medieval and early modern urban life. The Place de la Halle, also called Place du Tilleul, is a principal public space. Sainte-Marie-Madeleine church forms part of the fortified edge beside the upper entrance. The Maison des Princes houses the Musée du Vieux Pérouges, which presents historical objects and archives. Crafts and local food remain part of the town’s visitor experience. Pérouges belongs to Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. The preserved ensemble also reflects conservation and restoration; its present appearance should not be described as an untouched survival of the Middle Ages.
Redactionele duiding
The interest is in how ordinary urban forms become distinctive through texture and enclosure. Cobbles slow the walk, the walls contain it, and the square provides a pause. Considering the work of preservation adds another layer: the town is a place maintained over time, as well as a record of earlier building.
Aanbeveling
Walk from the upper gate and church towards the central square, using shoes suited to rough cobbles. Add the Musée du Vieux Pérouges for historical context when open. Confirm access arrangements if uneven surfaces are difficult, and distinguish public lanes from residential courtyards.
